Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using such treatments must be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting usually experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
